Post-Fracture Mobility Rehabilitation
Fracture rehabilitation begins where the orthopaedic team leaves off, and it begins promptly. The weeks of immobilisation required for fracture healing produce a predictable and clinically significant set of secondary consequences: joint stiffness, muscle atrophy, loss of proprioception, and the formation of periarticular and soft tissue contractures that, if not addressed early, become difficult and time-consuming to resolve. The rehabilitation programme following cast removal or surgical fixation is therefore as important as the fracture management itself in determining the patient's final functional outcome.
Post-fracture rehabilitation at this practice addresses joint mobility restoration through progressive mobilisation, muscle strength rebuilding through staged loading beginning as soon as the fracture's healing stage permits, scar tissue management where surgical incisions are involved, and proprioception and balance retraining for lower limb fractures where neuromuscular control is a prerequisite for safe return to activity. For sporting fractures (the scaphoid fractured in a rugby fall, the fifth metatarsal fractured in a football landing) rehabilitation is co-ordinated with a sport-specific return-to-play programme.
