Pain Control
Management and relief for acute and persistent pain.
Breaking the cycle of persistent pain: a clinical guide for Johannesburg's active population
Persistent musculoskeletal pain is not simply an injury that has lasted longer than expected. It is a condition with its own distinct biology, its own clinical management requirements, and (critically) its own very high rate of successful resolution when managed with the right combination of manual therapy, progressive exercise, and targeted interventions. At Luke Bramhall Physiotherapy's clinic in Houghton Estate, five of the most common and most debilitating pain conditions affecting Johannesburg's working and sporting population are treated with the depth of clinical focus they require: chronic neck and back pain, tension and cervicogenic headaches, nerve gliding and sciatica, acute muscle spasm, and joint inflammation and arthritis pain.
Understanding why pain persists is the first step in resolving it. Pain is not simply a measure of tissue damage. It is a complex output of the nervous system that can become sensitised (amplified and perpetuated) by a combination of ongoing mechanical loading, poor movement patterns, psychological stress, sleep disruption, and the cumulative effect of years of inadequate management. Persistent pain does not mean permanent pain. It means that the inputs driving the nervous system's alarm response have not yet been adequately addressed.
