Football & Soccer Injury Rehabilitation

Football produces a narrow and predictable set of injuries, and each has a well-evidenced management pathway that amateur football rarely follows.

Hamstring strains are the most common injury in the game and have the highest reinjury rate of any. The evidence is unambiguous that they need early, progressive eccentric loading rather than rest until the pain settles, and that clearance should rest on measured strength and the Nordic test rather than on how the leg feels in a straight-line jog. Groin and adductor problems follow similar logic, with the adductor squeeze test giving an objective number to track.

Lateral ankle sprains are routinely undertreated. The ankle stops hurting long before proprioception and peroneal strength recover, which is exactly why the second sprain follows the first so reliably. ACL injuries sit at the other end of the scale, as a nine-to-twelve month structured programme covered under our rehabilitation services.

Luke currently works as physiotherapist to TS Galaxy FC in the Premier Soccer League. Injuries here are assessed early, loaded early, measured throughout, and cleared against criteria, which is the difference between returning once and returning for good.
