Cycling Injury Physiotherapy & Biomechanics
Cycling complaints are overwhelmingly positional. Hours spent in a fixed posture, pedalling at a high cadence, means small errors in setup become large problems over a season, and treating the painful tissue without addressing the position produces temporary relief at best.
Anterior knee pain usually traces to saddle height or fore-aft position. Low back and neck pain follow excessive handlebar drop or reach beyond the rider's available hip and thoracic mobility. Achilles and calf problems commonly originate in cleat position and ankle mechanics through the pedal stroke. Iliotibial band irritation and lateral knee pain often reflect cleat rotation.
Assessment therefore covers the rider off the bike (hip and thoracic mobility, hamstring and calf length, trunk and gluteal strength) and the rider's position and mechanics on it. Treatment combines manual therapy and dry needling for symptom relief, a targeted strength programme for the deficits found, and specific guidance on the positional changes likely to resolve the underlying cause.
Where a full professional bike fit is warranted, we will say so and work alongside your fitter rather than duplicating their work.
