Return-to-Work Rehabilitation Programs

Return-to-work rehabilitation is a distinct clinical speciality that bridges the gap between medical or physiotherapy treatment and the specific physical demands of a patient's occupation. The goal is not simply to resolve the presenting injury, but to restore the physical capacities (the strength, endurance, flexibility, and positional tolerance) that the patient's job requires, and to do so with a structured, documented programme that provides clear milestones and an evidence-based return date.

At this practice, return-to-work programmes begin with a functional capacity assessment, a systematic evaluation of the patient's current physical abilities against the specific demands of their occupation. For a patient recovering from a lumbar disc injury who works in construction, the programme is built around progressive loading of the lumbar spine in the specific postures and movements their work requires, with graduated exposure to the lifting, carrying, and sustained bending demands of the job. For a desk-based professional recovering from a shoulder surgery, the programme focuses on restoring the sitting posture, keyboard and mouse tolerance, and the sustained light-load shoulder activities of office work, with a clear timeline and functional milestones.

Work simulations (exercises that replicate the specific physical demands of the patient's role) are integrated into the programme as the patient's capacity develops, ensuring that clearance for return to work reflects actual job demands rather than generic clinical parameters.
