Acute Muscle Spasm Relief
Acute muscle spasm, the sudden, intense, involuntary contraction of a muscle that follows a back injury, a neck movement gone wrong, or the onset of acute torticollis, is one of the most distressing acute presentations in musculoskeletal physiotherapy, and one of the most rapidly responsive to skilled intervention. The spasm itself is protective in origin: the nervous system contracts the muscle to guard the injured tissue. But the spasm quickly becomes its own pain driver, creating a pain-spasm-pain cycle that persists long after the original injury would have resolved.
Effective management combines manual therapy to reduce the spasm directly, dry needling for immediate relief of the contracted muscle, gentle mobilisation to restore the movement that the spasm is preventing, and education about the protective nature of the response to reduce the fear and tension that amplify it. Most acute spasm presentations resolve dramatically within one to two sessions when managed appropriately.
