Deep Tissue Sports Massage & Recovery

Deep tissue sports massage differs from conventional Swedish massage in both technique and purpose. Where Swedish massage works primarily on the superficial muscle layers and is directed at relaxation and general circulation, deep tissue sports massage uses sustained, targeted pressure to access the deeper muscle layers, the myofascial compartments, and the adhesions and restrictions within the connective tissue that accumulate through high-volume training. The goal is not relaxation, it is the restoration of tissue quality and movement capacity in muscles that have been repeatedly loaded to fatigue.

The most common sites requiring deep tissue work in Johannesburg's sporting population reflect the dominant sports: the gluteals, ITB complex, and hamstrings in runners and cyclists; the upper trapezius, levator scapulae, and thoracic paraspinals in cyclists and desk-based athletes; the forearm flexor and extensor compartments in padel, tennis, and golf players; and the entire posterior chain in football and rugby players managing the cumulative loading of a competitive season. At this practice, deep tissue massage is applied with precise anatomical knowledge, appropriate depth for the tissue's current state, and an understanding of how the work integrates with the patient's training load and recovery timeline.
